The International Symposium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Asian Microbial Resources

Japanese and Asian researchers have conducted joint researches on microbial resources for long time and brought fruitful and successful results. On the other hand, since the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) entered into force in 1993, management of biological resources becomes a big and sensitive topic in the world. The Department of Biotechnology, NITE has imported, used and provided Asian microbial resources in accordance with the CBD. To implement the sustainable utilization of microbial resources, it is important to search the way to approach the international joint research and development utilizing microbial resources. In October 2010, COP10 CBD will be held in Nagoya, Japan. (Public website: http://www.cop10.jp/aichi-nagoya/english/index.html.) We would like to take this opportunity to plan the international symposium on microbial resources of Asia. During the symposium, Asian and Japanese scientists and key persons of microbial resource centers will deliver speeches on the forefront of researches on rich Asian microbial resources and future of the development of microorganisms in the CBD era, and active discussion among members is also expected.
